Colombo High Court sets date for Gamage’s passport case

Mawbima, Lankadeepa, Divaina

The attorney general’s charge sheet against former state minister Diana Gamage, accusing her of acquiring a Sri Lankan passport with forged documents, was read before the Colombo High Court on January 9, 2025. Gamage pleaded not guilty to the charges. During the proceedings, President’s Counsel Shanaka Ranasinghe, representing Gamage, raised objections to the case, arguing that the document in question was created in 2003, and with the case being filed in 2024, over 20 years later, there was no legal basis for taking action on such an old document. High Court Judge Manjula Thilakaratne indicated that the objections would be considered during the trial. The case is scheduled for a hearing on March 5, 2025.

Concerns raised over Sri Lanka’s agreements with Chinese media

Anidda

Duminda Sampath, chairperson of the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association, has expressed special concern over the fact that five out of six agreements the president of Sri Lanka is set to sign with China are with Chinese media institutions. He pointed out that, at a time when media organisations are advocating for reforms to transform the state media — currently seen as a mouthpiece of the government — into a public service, these agreements raise alarm. Sampath noted, “We know that China has no space for private media; it operates entirely with state-owned media that reports solely in line with the government’s narrative. In such a context, it is a dangerous precedent for Sri Lankan state media institutions to enter into agreements with Chinese government-controlled media, especially when reforms are being demanded for Sri Lanka’s own state media.”
