Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: August 3 – August 9
Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers
Over the past week, the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) unrest at several prisons, including Welikada and Mahara; (ii) convening of a Sangha Samuluwa (clergy assembly) and the proposal to enact the Animal Welfare Bill; (iii) verdict against former IGP Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando in connection with the Easter Sunday attacks ; (iv) gazetting of the Judicature (Amendment) Bill as the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution to extend the retirement ages of judges ; and (v) Escalation of the dengue epidemic.
Two stories were featured exclusively in the Sinhala press, and they were on the prevailing inclement weather and the impact of El Niño on Sri Lanka.
The Tamil press exclusively featured four main stories, and they were on the: (i) exhumation of over 500 skeletal remains at the Chemmani mass grave site; (ii) ongoing protests in Valikamam North, Jaffna, and Keppapilavu, Mullaitivu, demanding the release of privately-owned lands; (iii) demands for accountability and justice concerning past atrocities, including enforced disappearances; and (iv) problems faced by the Hill Country Tamil community and the increase in wages of plantation workers.
