Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Aug.25 – 31

Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to three main stories. The three stories were on the: (i) arrest, remand, and subsequent release on bail of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe; (ii) reciprocal tariff imposed by the US; and (iii) excavations at the Chemmani mass grave.

The Sinhala press exclusively featured four main stories, and they were on the: (i) reported rise in organised crime and murders; (ii) reported rise in road accidents; (iii) protests by sugar cane farmers and paddy farmers; and (iv) strike launched by postal service workers.

The Tamil press exclusively featured five main stories, and they were on the: (i) excavations in Sampur following the discovery of human skeletal remains; (ii) preparations for the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council; (iii) protests and opposition to the militarisation of the North and East; (iv) protests and opposition to the militarisation of the North and East; and (v) claim made by South Indian politician and actor Joseph Chandrasekhar (Vijay) concerning the Katchatheevu island.
