Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Jan.5 – Jan.11
Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week, the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to six main stories. The six stories were on the: (i) education reforms and the inclusion of inappropriate content in the Grade 6 English module; (ii) US operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores; (iii) rebuilding Sri Lanka following Cyclonic Storm Ditwah; (iv) delays in holding the Provincial Council Elections; (v) current economic status of the country; and reported plans to increase the electricity tariffs and the fuel prices.
The Sinhala press exclusively featured one main story and it was on delays in appointing the new auditor general.
The Tamil press exclusively featured three main stories, and they were on the: (i) protests demanding justice and accountability for past violence, including the mass graves found in Chemmani ; (ii) protests opposing the alleged Sinhalisation and Buddhistisation of Tamil/Hindu religious sites in the North and East; and (iii) the arrest of former EPDP MP Douglas Devananda.
