Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Jan.12 – Jan.18
Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week, the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) official launch of the Rebuilding Sri Lanka initiative; (ii) proposals to raise the electricity tariffs; (iii) education reforms and the inclusion of an inappropriate link in a Grade 6 English module; (iv) escalating tensions between the USA and Iran; and (v) the government’s progress in curbing organised crime.
The Sinhala press exclusively featured one main story, and it was on the reported rise in the number of traffic accidents.
The Tamil press exclusively featured three main stories, and they were on the: (i) arrest of former EPDP MP Douglas Devananda; (ii) protests demanding justice and accountability for past crimes and violence; and (iii) protests opposing the alleged Sinhalisation and Buddhistisation of Tamil/Hindu religious sites in the North and East.
