Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Jan.6-19

Over the past two weeks the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) visit to China by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake; (ii) shortage of rice; (iii) reported rise in underworld activities; (iv) the completion of 100 days since the government came to power; and (v) progress made through the Clean Sri Lanka programme. There were four main stories featured exclusively in the Sinhala press. They were on the: (i) increase in the vehicle import tax; (ii) reported attempts to unite the UNP and the SJB; (iii) delays in releasing containers at the port; and (iv) delay in providing the fertiliser subsidy.The Tamil press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) calls for accountability and justice in relation to missing persons and past atrocities; and (ii) drafting of a new constitution.
