Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The Sinhala press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) alleged importation of substandard coal; and (ii) dissolution of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
The Tamil press exclusively featured four main stories, and they were on the: (i) protest march on Vattuvakal Bridge by mothers and relatives of the missing, demanding justice for their loved ones on International Women’s Day; (ii) demands for accountability and justice concerning past atrocities, including enforced disappearances and mass graves; (iii) opposition to the Mahaweli L Scheme and the Kivul Oya project; and (iv) demand to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and enact a new constitution.
