Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Mar.23 – Mar.29

Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week, the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to four main stories. The four stories were on the: (i) war in the Middle East and its impact on Sri Lanka, including the risks of a fuel shortage, an economic crisis, and disruptions to Sri Lanka’s industries; (ii) alleged importation of substandard coal and the risk of an emerging energy crisis; (iii) reported shortage of gas in the country; (iv) calls from various actors to end the war in the Middle East through negotiations.

There were no topics featured exclusively in the Sinhala press last week.

The Tamil press exclusively featured four main stories, and they were on the: (i) demands for accountability and justice concerning past atrocities, including enforced disappearances and mass graves; (ii) calls from Tamil political parties to hold the delayed Provincial Council (PC) elections; (iii) problems faced by the Hill Country Tamil community and the increase in wages of plantation workers; and (iv) demand to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and enact a new constitution.
