Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Nov.17 – Dec.7
Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) destruction caused by Cyclonic Storm Ditwah; (ii) rally organised by the joint opposition in Nugegoda on November 21; (iii) enactment of the Appropriation Act for 2026; (iv) removal of archaeology signboards in Batticaloa; and (v) dispute over the placement of a Buddha statue in Trincomalee.
The Sinhala press exclusively featured one main story and it was on the agreements signed by the Sri Lankan government with the Indian and US governments.
The Tamil press exclusively featured three main stories, and they were on the: (i) commemoration of Maveerar Naal (Great Heroes’ Day); (ii) ongoing protests by relatives of missing persons and residents demanding the release of their lands in the North and East; and (iii) issues pertaining to the increase in the wages of plantation communities.
