Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Nov.3 – 16
Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past two weeks the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to four main stories. The four stories were on the: (i) Budget Speech 2026 and the commencement of the second reading debates; (ii) protest organised by opposition groups against the government on November 21; (iii) measures taken by the government to counter organised crime and seize narcotics; and (iv) delay in holding the provincial council elections.
The Sinhala press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) accusations levelled at the CIABOC by the opposition; and (ii) problems encountered by farmers due to the lack of appropriate prices for onions and potatoes.
The Tamil press exclusively featured four main stories, and they were on the: (i) preparations for the commemoration of Maveerar Naal (Great Heroes’ Day); (ii) ongoing excavations at mass grave sites, including in Chemmani; (iii) ongoing protests by missing persons and landowners demanding justice and accountability; and (iv) increase in the wages of the plantation sector employees.
