Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Oct.27 – Nov.2

Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) launch of the “Ratama Ekata – Jathika Meheyuma” (trans. “A Nation United – National Mission”) to eradicate illicit drugs in the country ; (ii) assassination of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairperson Lasantha Wickramasekera; (iii) information on past crimes including murders revealed by alleged underworld suspect Ishara Sewwandi; (iv) reported plans of the opposition to mobilise under a common banner; and (vii) requirements to hold the provincial council elections.

There were no stories that were featured exclusively in the Sinhala press over the past week.

The Tamil press exclusively featured five main stories, and they were on the: (i) outcome at the 60th Regular Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC); (ii) preparations for the 2026 Budget Speech/ Appropriation Bill; (iii) protests staged across the North and East demanding justice for missing persons and the release of occupied lands; (iv) ongoing protests against development projects in Mannar, which are seen as harmful to the environment; and (v) ongoing excavations at various mass grave sites, including Chemmani.
