Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Sep.1 – 7
Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) arrest of five high-profile Sri Lankan organised criminals in Indonesia; (ii) arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the reported unity of the opposition; (iii) fatal bus accident in Ella; (iv) proposals for new educational reforms; and (v) alleged attempts by the government to repress opposition politicians and exact revenge.
The Sinhala press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) potential adverse impact of the UNHRC session on the ‘war heroes’; and (ii) reported rise in labour strikes in the country.
The Tamil press exclusively featured four main stories, and they were on the: (i) commencement of the 60th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council; (ii) ongoing excavations in Chemmani and Sampur; (iii) protests demanding the release of lands in the North and East and justice for missing persons; and (iv) President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s visit to Jaffna and Katchatheevu island.
