Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Sep.15 – 21

Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) protests in Nepal against its government; (ii) asset declarations of Ministers Wasantha Samarasinghe and Sunil Watagala; (iii) ongoing 60th session of the UNHRC; (iv) enactment of the Presidents’ Entitlements (Repeal) Bill in parliament ; and (v) enforcement of the law against former politicians on charges of corruption.

The Sinhala press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) arrest of five Sri Lankan organised criminals in Indonesia and (ii) protest by CEB employees against the proposed restructuring of the CEB.

The Tamil press exclusively featured four main stories, and they were on the: (i) halting of excavations at the Chemmani mass grave site in Jaffna due to lack of funds; (ii) commemorative events held to mark the anniversaries of Rasaiah Parthipan (alias Thileepan)’s hunger strike and death; (iii) ongoing protests across the North and East demanding the release of occupied lands and justice for enforced disappearances; and (iv) preparations for the 2026 Budget.
