Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to seven main stories. The seven stories were on the: (i) completion of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s first year in office; (ii) ongoing 60th Regular Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC); (iii) investigations into organised criminals and the discovery of crystal methamphetamine (street name ICE) production sites; (iv) challenges facing Sri Lanka’s economy; (v) asset declarations of government ministers and MPs; (vi) enforcement of the law against past politicians on charges of corruption; and (vii) President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The Sinhala press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) reported rise in fatal road accidents; and (ii) protest by CEB employees against the proposed restructuring of the CEB.
The Tamil press exclusively featured four main stories, and they were on the: (i) 38th year anniversary of the passing of Rasaiah Parthipan (alias Thileepan) following a hunger strike in 1987; (ii) protests staged across the North and East demanding justice for missing persons and the release of occupied lands; (iii) ongoing protests against development projects in Mannar, which are seen as harmful to the environment; and (iv) ongoing excavations at various mass grave sites, including Chemmani.
