Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Sep.8 – 14
Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to seven main stories. The seven stories were on the: (i) fatal bus accident in Ella; (ii) enactment of the Presidents’ Entitlements (Repeal) Bill in parliament; (iii) arrest of five Sri Lankan organised criminals in Indonesia; (iv) ongoing 60th session of the UNHRC; (v) protests in Nepal against its government; (vi) president’s visit to Jaffna and the dispute over Katchatheevu island; and (vii) enforcement of the law against past politicians on charges of corruption.
There were no stories featured exclusively in the Sinhala press last week.
The Tamil press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) ongoing excavations for skeletal remains in the Chemmani mass grave in Jaffna and Sampur in Trincomalee; and (ii) protests by relatives of missing persons demanding justice for their loved ones.
