Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) allegations of corruption against Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody ; (ii) launch of the book “Searching for the Mastermind of the Easter Sunday Attacks” by former MP Udaya Gammanpila; (iii) ongoing war in the Middle East between US-Israel and Iran; (iv) increase in the electricity tariffs and the reported energy crisis in the country; and (v) trade union action launched by the GMOA.

The Sinhala press exclusively featured one main story, and it was on the alleged plans to celebrate the birthday of murder suspect Ishara Sewwandi at the Colombo Crime Division.

The Tamil press exclusively featured three main stories, and they were on the: (i) demands for accountability and justice concerning past atrocities, including enforced disappearances and mass graves; (ii) the problems faced by the Hill Country Tamil community and the increase in wages of plantation workers; and (iii) reported internal tussles within Tamil political parties.
