Protest opposing the removal of the Vavuniya mayor
On June 19, Northern Province Governor Nagalingam Vethanayahan removed S. Kandeepan from office as mayor and from his Vavuniya Municipal Council seat through an Extraordinary Gazette. On June 29, residents and business owners in Vavuniya protested against the removal of Kandeepan from office as mayor. Only privately-owned Tamil TV channels Dan News, IBC Tamil and Shakthi TV afforded coverage to the protest in their primetime news telecasts on June 29.
