Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Feb.9 – Feb.22
Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past two weeks, the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to six main stories. The six stories were on the: (i) court verdict on the murder of former MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer; (ii) murder of a lawyer and his spouse in Akuregoda; (iii) National Independence Day celebrations; (iv) proposal for education reforms; (v) results of the Mood of the Nation survey by Verité Research; and (vi) criticisms over the conduct of the speaker in parliament.
The Sinhala press exclusively featured one main story, and it was on the government being accused of allegedly importing substandard coal.
The Tamil press exclusively featured six main stories, and they were on the: (i) protests marking Independence Day as a Black Day; (ii) demands for accountability and justice concerning past atrocities, including enforced disappearances and mass graves; (iii) ppposition to the Mahaweli L Scheme and the Kivul Oya project; (iv) arrest of four Buddhist monks in relation to the placement of a Buddha statue in the Trincomalee coastal zone; (v) increase in the wages of plantation workers; and (vi) the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old in Alaipiddy, Jaffna, by the Sri Lanka Police after he reportedly failed to comply with orders at a checkpoint.
