Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Feb.26 – Mar.3

Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to four main stories. The four stories were on the: (i) arrest of former intelligence chief Suresh Sallay in connection with the Easter Sunday attack investigations; (ii) escalating war between the US/Israel and Iran; (iii) perception of the government as revealed through public opinion polls; and (iv) government’s programmes to eradicate narcotics and organised crime.

The Sinhala press exclusively featured three main stories, and they were on the: (i) alleged importation of substandard coal; (ii) proposals for education reforms; and (iii) the Maha Sangha Convention and the accusations of anti-religious ideologies levelled against the government.

The Tamil press exclusively featured four main stories, and they were on the: (i) demands for accountability and justice concerning past atrocities, including enforced disappearances and mass graves; (ii) opposition to the Mahaweli L Scheme and the Kivul Oya project; (iii) arrest of four Buddhist monks in relation to the placement of a Buddha statue in the Trincomalee coastal zone; and (iv) demand to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and enact a new constitution.
