Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Jan.19 – Jan.25

Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week, the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to four main stories. The four stories were on: (i) President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s visit to Jaffna and his remarks at the Thai Pongal celebration event; (ii) the protests in Iran and the escalating tensions between the US and Iran; (iii) the proposals for education reforms; and (iv) the appointment of the three non-MP members of the Constitutional Council.

The Sinhala press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) protests opposing the attorney general; and (ii) delays in appointing an auditor general.

The Tamil press exclusively featured three main stories, and they were on the: (i) protests demanding justice and accountability for past crimes, including enforced disappearances and mass graves; (ii) formulation of a new constitution; and (iii) arrest of four Buddhist monks in relation to the placement of a Buddha statue in the Trincomalee coastal zone.
