Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Jan.26 – Feb.1

Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to four main stories. The four stories were on the: (i) ssues concerning the offices of attorney general, auditor general and deputy secretary general of the parliament; (ii) proposed education reforms; (iii) trade union action by the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA); and (iv) calls to expedite legal action against the MPs of previous governments.

The Sinhala press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) controversy surrounding a leaked video linked to a leading school in Colombo; and (ii) alleged importation of substandard coal.

The Tamil press exclusively featured four main stories, and they were on the: (i) demands to provide justice and accountability for past crimes including enforced disappearances and mass graves; (ii) increase in the wages of plantation workers; (iii) formulation of a new constitution; and (iv) arrest of four Buddhist monks in relation to the placement of a Buddha statue in the Trincomalee coastal zone.
