Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Oct.13 – 19

Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week, the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) altercation between a lawyer and a police constable at the Mount Lavinia court premises; (ii) NPP government’s first cabinet reshuffle ; (iii) arrest of Ishara Sewwandi and other suspected underworld figures in Nepal; (iv) passing of Resolution A/HRC/60.L.1/Rev.1 on Sri Lanka without a vote at the 60th Regular Session of the UNHRC; and (v) decision to not increase the electricity tariffs.

The Sinhala press exclusively featured only one story and it was on the opposition voiced against Director-General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) Ranga Dissanayake.

The Tamil press exclusively featured three main stories, and they were on the: (i) protests staged across the North and East demanding justice for missing persons and the release of occupied lands; (ii) ongoing protests against development projects in Mannar, which are seen as harmful to the environment; and (iii) ongoing excavations at various mass grave sites, including Chemmani.
