Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Oct.20 – 26

Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) adoption of A/HRC/60/L.1/Rev.1 on Sri Lanka at the 60th Regular Session of the UNHRC; (ii) assassination of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairperson Lasantha Wickramasekara; (iii) prevailing inclement weather; (iv) approval for the disbursement of the next IMF tranche; (v) investigations into underworld activities following the arrest of Ishara Sewwandi.

The Sinhala press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) opposition voiced against CIABOC Director-General Ranga Dissanayake; and (ii) proposed new education reforms.

The Tamil press exclusively featured four main stories, and they were on the: (i) protests staged across the North and East demanding justice for missing persons and the release of occupied lands; (ii) ongoing protests against development projects in Mannar, which are seen as harmful to the environment; (iii) ongoing excavations at various mass grave sites, including Chemmani; and (iv) preparations for the commemoration of Maveerar Naal (Great Heroes’ Day).
