Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Sep.29 – Oct.12

Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past two weeks the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) proposal to amend the Penal Code to prohibit physical and mental punishment; (ii) resumption of investigations into the murder of Wasim Thajudeen; (iii) resolution on Sri Lanka passed at the 60th Regular Session of the UNHRC without a vote; (iv) measures taken to tackle drug trafficking and organised crime; and (v) Sri Lanka’s economy and the approval granted for the release of the next tranche of the IMF EFF.

The Sinhala press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) allegations that the government is promoting LGBTQIA+ tourism and initiatives; and (ii) enforcement of the law against politicians from past governments.

The Tamil press exclusively featured four main stories, and they were on the: (i) ongoing protests in Mannar opposing development projects that are harmful to the environment; (ii) ongoing excavations at sites suspected of containing mass graves including in Chemmani, Jaffna; (iii) protests demanding justice for past atrocities, missing persons and the release of lands; and (iv) wage and housing issues faced by the Malaiyaga Thamilar community.
