42 years since the Black July pogrom of 1983
On July 23, several commemorative events were held in the North and East to mark 42 years since the Black July pogrom. Only privately-owned Tamil TV channels Dan News, IBC Tamil and Shakthi TV allotted coverage to the commemorative events in their primetime news telecasts.
On the same day, the Socialist Youth Society facilitated a train between Colombo and Jaffna to mark Black July, named the ‘Friendship Train’. Only privately-owned Tamil TV channels Dan News and Shakthi TV, and state-owned Sinhala TV channel Rupavahini afforded coverage to the ‘Friendship Train’ in their primetime news telecasts.
