44 years since the burning of the Jaffna Public Library
In June 1981, the Jaffna Public Library was set ablaze by an organised mob. On June 1, 2025, commemorative events were held to mark the 44th anniversary of the burning of the library. Privately-owned Tamil TV channels Dan News, IBC Tamil and Shakthi TV afforded coverage to the commemorative events. By contrast, no coverage was afforded to the events by state-owned Tamil TV channels Nethra TV and Vasantham TV, as well as by the Sinhala TV channels, privately-owned Sirasa TV, Swarnavahini, Siyatha TV, TV Derana and Hiru TV and state-owned ITN and Rupavahini.
