Official visits to the Chemmani mass grave in Jaffna

On June 25, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk visited the Chemmani mass grave, paid tribute to the victims and spoke with protesters who had urged him to visit the site. Türk’s visit to Chemmani was afforded coverage only in privately-owned Tamil TV channels Dan News and Shakthi TV.

On the same day, Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar, NPP MP Rajeevan Jeyachandramoorthy and Acting Leader of the ITAK C. V. K. Sivagnanam also visited the site. However, protesters demanded that they leave the site. Some of the privately owned Sinhala and Tamil channels covered their visits.

Meanwhile, none of the state-owned Tamil and Sinhala channels covered any of the above visits to Chemmani.
