Protest in Mannar opposing environmentally destructive projects
On June 11, more than 2,000 people – including youth, women’s collectives, religious leaders, fisherfolk, farmers and activists – staged a protest in Mannar opposing environmentally destructive development projects. The protest, organised by the Mannar Citizens’ Committee, opposed illegal sand mining, proposed ilmenite extraction and large-scale wind power developments. Privately-owned Tamil TV channels Dan News, IBC Tamil and Shakthi TV afforded coverage to the protest. By contrast, no coverage was afforded to the protest by state-owned Tamil TV channels Nethra TV and Vasantham TV, state-owned Sinhala TV channels ITN and Rupavahini and privately-owned Sinhala TV channels Sirasa TV, Swarnavahini, Siyatha TV, TV Derana and Hiru TV.
