Provincial councils: One system, three strands
The privately-owned Sinhala newspaper Aruna and the privately-owned Tamil newspaper Virakesari recently featured an editorial and an opinion piece on provincial councils. Their views on provincial councils contrasted along three main strands of discussion: 1) whether the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord was imposed or inevitable; 2) whether the provincial councils are an economic burden or a democratic gain; and 3) whether it’s time to abolish provincial council elections or uphold democracy.
