Major stories in the Sinhala and Tamil press: Feb.2 – Feb.8
Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) 78th Independence Day celebrations ; (ii) proposals for education reforms ; (iii) trade union action by the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA); (iv) charges of corruption levelled against the speaker by the deputy secretary general of parliament who was suspended; and (v) appointment of the first female auditor general.
The Sinhala press exclusively featured one main story and it was on the alleged importation of substandard coal.
The Tamil press exclusively featured five main stories, and they were on the: (i) protests marking Independence Day as a “Black Day” in the North and East; (ii) demands for accountability and justice concerning past atrocities, including enforced disappearances and mass graves; (iii) opposition to the Mahaweli L Scheme and the Kivul Oya project; (iv) increase in the wages of plantation workers; and (v) arrest of four Buddhist monks in relation to the placement of a Buddha statue in the Trincomalee coastal zone.
